So I guess you made good use of the time which I spent in china chasing my would-be-girlfriend-- great entry!
I agree on the optional essay part but want to point out a little something: you don't have to write THEIR optional essay--engineering one---it's fine if you ditch that topic and just attach another essay that you think will delineate your personality better to the end of the application.tchenatmithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13122001165025253148noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3706463099049812801.post-88553996696922087172008-08-03T08:28:00.000-04:002008-08-03T08:28:00.000-04:00"It took me two essays, one about my middle easter..."It took me two essays, one about my middle eastern heritage and one about how tennis changed me."

That makes two of us then.

Excellent guide, Omar! I would add to #5-Activities: keep them diverse. Adcoms want to see that applicants have a wide variety of interests with which they can enrich the college's community.

Also, the interview. Show up prepared. Be confident, but modest. Ambitious, yet sincere. Have fun. Ask questions. Converse. Discuss your strongest assets, at the same time, your weaknesses, and how they've contributed to your uniqueness. And keep in mind that your objective is NOT to click with your interviewer, but to show off a different side of your personality which cannot be conveyed on paper, and learn more about your prospective college.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3706463099049812801.post-43665855061127810372008-08-03T02:22:00.000-04:002008-08-03T02:22:00.000-04:00Good stuff duskie...and yah I rushed my MIT app =(...Good stuff duskie...and yah I rushed my MIT app =(Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3706463099049812801.post-4721956843732267602008-08-02T23:09:00.000-04:002008-08-02T23:09:00.000-04:00As someone applying this year, I can see this bein...As someone applying this year, I can see this being very useful. Go find the common application and start writing an essay for that.
1) the questions that we get are rather vague. for an actual topic, create your own question based off of it. If you did well on the AP US History, craft a question that starts with "evaluate the extent to which...", or act as if someone has just asked you the question in conversation and (online or meatspace).
2) Remember, your audience has read thousands of essays in a short period of time. Try to put yourself in their place. (To do this, try reading something by Charles Dickens (or another author you find insufferably dull at times) in one day.)
3) Don't try to write a good essay fully-formed from the top of your head. Don't worry about grammar, spelling, structure, or even having a point. Ramble.See how many clichés you can fit into once sentence. Spew your brains onto the computer screen for a good 10 minutes. Remember that no one will see this. However, there is a reasonable chance that you'll be carried away by some tangent, and produce a good paragraph or two. This will seem inefficient, but it is better than spending 2 hours and producing nothing.
4)If you are looking for topics:
-we are what we habitually do. think of one of your habits and explain its origins, its effects, a story that involves one of its instances.
-look at some art (for values of 'art' that include webcomics) with which you really connect. Don't get distracted and spend 2 hours surfing webcomics. Write your reaction. Then, try to figure out, based on your life history, why you had that reaction.
5)After you are done, find a copy of Strunk and White's Elements of Style. also read the essay "Politics and the English Language" by George Orwell.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3706463099049812801.post-13566191473061368492008-08-02T12:39:00.000-04:002008-08-02T12:39:00.000-04:00Wow Omar, nicely done.
